So, your house is going on the market. Fortunately, or unfortunately, buyers typically only give the opportunity for one impression. With the help of our friends over at HGTV, we’ve got some easy steps for making sure your home’s first impression is a good one.

Step 1: Maintenance

Updating your home is helpful, over-upgrading is not. Stick to quick fixes that keep your home clean and up-to date. Buyers don’t want $10k added to the price of the home, simply because you replaced the carpet. If they were to spend that much on new flooring, they want to pick it out themselves.

Things to try instead: get a new coat of paint on all the walls, replace door handles and cabinet hardware, and fix that leaky faucet!

Step 2: Take the home out of your house

Buyers need to envision this house becoming their home. You can help by removing family pictures, sentimental knick-knacks, and other items causing clutter. Give them a well-decorated house, that has enough blank canvas to be made into a home.

Step 3: Remove the pets

Pets are adorable…and distracting. Let your potential buyers focus on the house instead by sending the pets off to a sitter for the day. Clean up the hair, the food dishes and the toys – clean is key!

Step 4: Clean your closets!

Every buyer is looking for storage space, and they aren’t afraid to snoop. To keep your closets and cabinets looking clean, remove half of the items from each space and arrange neatly.

Step 5: Light it up

“Do what you have to do to make your home bright and cheery – it will make it more sellable.”

Remove the blinds, open the curtain, up the wattage of your light bulbs – whatever it takes to let more light in your home!
