You’ve bought a new home – yay! Before you move box upon box of belongings in, check off these five things from your to-do list …you’ll be happy you did.

1. Change the Locks

Whether they forgot to hand over one of their extra copies – or overlooked the spare key they gave the realtor – odds are, spare keys to your home are floating around out there. For peace of mind, change the locks. You will sleep comfortably knowing that you are the only ones with access to your home.

2. Deep Clean

Most people will pre-clean the house for you, but some won’t. Before you move everything in – do an overall clean of the home, including steaming the carpets and wiping down the insides of the cabinets. If you have the resources, save yourself some time and hire professional cleaners!

3. Paint BEFORE You Bring Your Belongings In

A fresh coat of paint is always a good idea. This gives you the opportunity to change up the feel of the room with a new shade, or simply revel in the fact that your newly painted walls won’t need another coat for years to come. (Don’t forget to paint the ceilings while you’re at it!)

4. Get Window Treatments

Serving as privacy and a finishing touch, it is a good idea to get window treatments prior to moving in. If you’re still deciding on the style you prefer for your main living areas, stick to getting simple treatments in the rooms you need privacy the most, including bedrooms and bathrooms.

5. Circuit Breaker Box and Main Water Valve

You will not be sorry that you took the time to educate yourself on the inner workings of your new home. Understanding which fuses control the kitchen, versus which ones control your master bathroom, may not seem crucial at the time – but you’ll be extra thankful for this information when faced with a time sensitive issue.
